Hongo Kikusakacho Kamosu is a microbrewery in Hongo, Bunkyo Ward that brews and sells unfiltered craft beer. I am the owner and head brewer, and am also in charge of overall operations, including planning promotional products.
We aim to be a beer bar that blends in with the local community, like a local bakery, so we serve beer in a standing-style setting so that customers can casually drop in and have a beer, and we also offer a take-out service so that customers can enjoy craft beer at home.
In Germany, the home of beer, the use of returnable containers is promoted to reduce the environmental impact, and this culture is especially established for beer. When I lived in Germany, it was part of my weekend routine to go to a beer bar with empty bottles in hand.
In this situation, our company also faced the operational challenge of using environmentally friendly returnable glass bottles for takeout containers in order to attract repeat customers while also increasing awareness of our store through means other than word of mouth.
So I wanted to create a souvenir that customers could buy to commemorate their visit to the store, or a novelty item that would help advertise the store, and while I was searching online I found your company's product pages for "bottle bags (wine bags)" and "miniature bottles." After some consideration, I decided to first enquire about "miniature bottles," which can be made in small quantities.
Are there any points you were particular about when commercializing the product, such as materials and design?
We brew and sell several types of beer, each of which has a label sticker with an illustration printed on it, and this time we have decided to offer two of these designs.
In order to reproduce an image as close to the real thing as possible, the person in charge at your company recreated samples multiple times in accordance with our detailed requests, such as the color scheme, the luxurious feel of the label, and printing precision, and the resulting quality exceeded our expectations.
In particular, our store's logo is based on the image of yeast dividing during the fermentation process, which is a particular focus of beer brewing, and we wanted as many people as possible to know about it.
However, although the shop's logo is included in the illustration on the beer label, when it is miniature the visibility of the logo is reduced, and we felt that it would be a waste to use it as a product that is meant to promote the shop, so we had the design adjusted to include the logo in large size on the back, which was a point of emphasis.
How was the reaction to the introduction?
Our attention to detail paid off, and the product is both cute and realistic, like a miniature, and we are very pleased with the finished product. We actually handed them out as prizes to customers who attended brewery tours and purchased take-out bottles, and they were very well received. Customers who attended commented that they would like to participate again and spread the word to their friends, so we are considering continuing to distribute them in the future.
This time, rather than simply addressing the issue of improving product quality, they provided us with optimal suggestions to address the challenge of raising awareness, enabling us to commercialize goods that matched the concept of our service.
